Point of View and Tense

Everyone has a preference which Point of View (POV) and tense to read and/or write in.

In general, I prefer third person, past tense. Science Fiction and Fantasy (SFF) tends to be written in third person. I also read a lot of Young Adult (YA), though, which often utilizes first person narration since creates more of a connection with the reader. Often, first person stories use present tense.

I'll admit I groan a little when I start a book and learn it's written in present tense because it feels unnatural to me. We tend to use past tense in speech.

But when reading, I will adapt early on and then stop noticing the POV and tense. Same goes for second person and omniscient POV, which can be awkward or confusing to read. They all have their place and if I'm enjoying the book, then these stylistic choices matter little to me.

I enjoy third person, multiple POV the most.  SFF involves massive world building, which is more easily conveyed in this way. And I absolutely love to see what the characters think of each other.

Multiple third person POV works in the Reign of the North Forest world particularly well because of the complexity of the politics and storyline. I make an effort to include character assessments of other characters to help create more insight for the reader. For example, in Chapter 2 of Imperious Realm, a server identifies an identical twin as the "weirder one."

As I continue to progress in my writing journey, it's possible I may create a story line in future that works better with a different tense other than third person. Ultimately, it will depend on the story.
